    Saints confirm three pre-season friendlies
    Northampton Saints – Jun 27, 2006
Head coach Paul Grayson said: “After three games on the road ahead of last season we are looking forward to playing our pre-season games at Franklin’s Gardens against three sides that should provide plenty of entertainment for our supporters. ” Saints had provisionally booked Munster for the 19th but the Heineken Cup champions were planning to send over a development side rather than their first team. The loss of Munster meant Saints needed to find another Heineken Cup standard club for the run-up to the season and Llanelli were drafted in ahead of rugby neighbours Bedford Blues who due to their own commitments were unable to fulfil an alternative fixture. Director of rugby Budge Pountney said: “We have played some excellent warm-up games against Bedford in recent years but when we realised Munster would not be sending a full strength squad we had to opt for another European standard team. Llanelli were the perfect replacement as we did not draw them in the Heineken Cupfor once! I am sure we will play Bedford again in the not too distant future and we all look forward to it. ” Author: Caroline Moore E-mail this page.

    Meehan joins Bath coaching team
    BBC News – Jun 27, 2006
“The timing to leave Paris was right. I had four years with the side and it’s a different culture there to here” he said. “I had the opportunity to work with Stade in the Heineken Cup where we played a few English teams so I have got a bit of background and history of the teamshere. Bath are looking for a new coaching team after losing head coach Brian Ashton forwards coach Michael Foley and skills coach Richard Graham at the end of the season. The club are closing in on appointing Australian Mark Bakewell as forwards coach but are awaiting news on a work permit. The players returned to pre-season training on Monday and despite being without a senior management team Calleja is confident the new structure is coming together. “While the position of our forwards coach is still subject to a work permit we are happy that Steve and the fitness coaches will provide the players with all they need as pre-season training begins” Calleja added.

While Heineken and Stella Artois are popular sponsors of pro tennis events the American-brewed Budweiser is getting flack in Germany as the official beer of the World Cup as reported by David Hiltbrand of Knight Ridder: “Although Anheuser-Busch’s Budweiser is one of America’s biggest brands it gets little respect in Germany the ancestral homeland of the Busch brewing family where it has been derided as spuelwasser — dishwater. Germany’s age-old beer-purity law limiting ingredients to water yeast barley and hops effectively kept out the king of beers — made with rice — until the hurdle was lifted in 1987. “Germany’s beer lovers can already taste defeat” read a headline on a Times of London article. It called Budweiser’s World Cup sponsorship a slap in the face for a country that takes pride in its high-quality beer production with a whopping 1274 breweries. “Most pubs don’t even stock it” Walter Koenig of the Bavarian Breweries’ Association told the paper… Germany’s age-old beer-purity law limiting ingredients to water yeast barley and hops effectively kept out the king of beers — made with rice — until the hurdle was lifted in 1987. “Germany’s beer lovers can already taste defeat” read a headline on a Times of London article. But what can we do? Budweiser paid $40 million for the concession even before Germany had been chosen to host the tournament. ” Nicholas von Hoffman wrote in the Nation that German youths mounted a Web site (.
