Two nights? Just an hour flight? For free too? And for two?A quick look at the website for The Dylan in the heart of the city was enough to sway me as I can do posh even when at a push. I’ve been to Amsterdam before but it was rather an uneventful experience as my partner at the time wanted to partake in something other than the mocha in the various coffee shops. As this wasn’t my cup of psychedelic java all I really recall was that sickly sweet smell which creeps into your clothes and permeates the narrow streets of the city. It also belted it down during my last trip and although I am a November baby dragging a case through cobbled streets which were also being dug up wasn’t my idea of a good time. n this occasion however I was delighted to return even if it was the hottest spell recorded in recent years and my feet felt like raw hams after two days of solidly pounding lanes with unpronounceable names. Getting to the hotel was easy even for a non-map reader like me – tip number one: take a patient partner with you who can read one. It was also simple to buy a train ticket from the mammoth Schiphol airport to central station – it cost us about seven euros for two cheap day returns far cheaper than a daily pass for one from Pengam to Cardiff… Take a standard canal cruise lasting one hour or cruises of four hours including dinner. 4 A bit of blingMany diamond shops can be found in Amsterdam including: Gassan Diamonds Amsterdam Diamond Center Van Moppes Diamonds and Coster Diamonds. 5 Cheers now and all the bestEver wondered what it was like to be a beer bottle? The Heineken Experience acquaints you with the world of Heineken the world’s largest beer exporter. Keep up to date with the news.

Another retailer the Signet jewellery group is set to unveil second-quarter results boosted by its US operations. Signet may also comment on the potential break-up of the group or the possible sale of the UK business to its founder Gerald Ratner. Elsewhere the purchase of Stanley Leisure’s betting shops and online gambling operation is expected to have boosted the interims of high-street bookmaker William Hill despite disappointing earnings from the World Cup. n to mining: Rio Tinto’s interims are expected to be strong thanks to its iron ore and copper businesses. A bullish outlook and discussion of further buybacks and deals could also be on the cards. Rival Xstrata which is moving closer to a takeover of nickel miner Falconbridge is likely to have benefited from the strong demand for copper and zinc surging commodity prices and cost savings in the first half. Anglo American meanwhile tipped as a bidder for Inco (a failed Falconbridge suitor) is also likely to report a strong first half.
