    2005/06 Review Part Two

The new daddy spent the afternoon alternating between Radio Newcastle where Messrs Williams and Smith were very depressed (“well at least it’s not cold”) and Radio Northampton where there was a sense of stunned disbelief at the score. A mere five days passed before the biggest match of the season so far. With those thoughts of Heineken Cup league qualification looking unlikely the European Challenge Cup was the target. Enough in fact to cause the closure of the North Stand due to access problems outside the ground. The sparse crowd (not helped by the weather or Sky showing their first ever game at this stage of the competition) saw Toby Flood’s virtuoso performance (18 of the 23 points) take Falcons comfortably past Connacht’s reach and into the semi-finals.

But study one particular area and they all look pretty thin compared with their Celtic brethren. For there can’t be another rugby competition in the world which possesses as many quality scrum-halves as those plying their trade in Wales Ireland and Scotland. Munster winning last season’s Heineken Cup has given the Celtic tournament a real lift and so has the arrival of a certain New Zealand legend named Justin Marshall. His presence at the spreys following a big-money move from Leeds Tykes and Leinster’s capture of the 31-times capped Australia international Chris Whitaker raises the number of Test No 9s in the Magners League to an incredible nine. There’s the Welsh trio of Dwayne Peel Mike Phillips and Gareth Cooper Ireland star Peter Stringer and new cap Isaac Boss and Scottish duo Chris Cusiter and Mike Blair. nly two scrum-halves in the Celtic competition – Glasgow’s Sam Pinder and Connacht’s Tom Tierney – lack international experience but they too are capable operators. Peel and Marshall who went head-to-head in the first Test between the All Blacks and the British Lions in 2005 are on the top rung when it comes to the world ladder… “Stringer is very experienced and knows how to close a game down. “He’s an important part of a Munster team that won the Heineken Cup and an Irish side that took the Triple Crown. “And the little man knows when to strike himself as he proved in the European final against Biarritz. “They didn’t expect him to run from a scrum but when he spotted French flanker Serge Betsen with his head down grazing and the blindside unguarded he was over in a flash for the decisive try. That’s what experience does for you. Howley is also a fan of Blair whom he describes as being similar to Phillips.

Bulgaria’s beer market expects growth in volume
    Sofia Echo – Jul 31, 2006
8 million hectolitres of beer last year but torrential rains spoiled the summer season. The actual volume of beer sales in Bulgaria was higher because the Ledenika & MM brewery which has an estimated market share of six to eight percent is not a member of the UBB. Dutch Heineken’s Zagorka InBev’s Kamenitza brewery and Danish group Carlsberg are the dominant players on the market. “The World Cup football tournament in Germany did not affect beer sales much because they are traditionally strong in the summer” Ivanov said. The rising culture of beer drinking among young people is the key engine to growing consumption said Anton Nenov executive director of Boliarka brewery. Alexander Gruncharov CE of Carlsberg Bulgaria said that growth in beer sales for the first half of 2006 was also due to higher sales of international-branded beers. Brewers in the country currently produce seven beers under international licences Amstel Heineken Murphy’s Stella Artois Beck’s Staropramen and Tuborg and two more are expected to enter the market by the end of the year said Ivanov.
