The Anglo-Welsh EDF Energy Cup is a passport to the Heineken Cup for the winners but after this defeat the Exiles are unlikely to progress in a pool that also contains the dangerous Ospreys. On a miserable day for Irish Delon Armitage whose long-range penalty put them into the lead three minutes before the break limped off with an ankle injury near the end. Armitage who had been moved to centre from full-back for this match will be doubtful for the start of next month’s Heineken Cup campaign. Shane Geraghty had pulled out of the starting line-up after fracturing a hand in training on Friday and the fly-half will be missing for up to six weeks. Irish’s only cheering news yesterday was the arrival of the former All Black prop Clarke Dermody from New Zealand.

Belief is back says relieved Caldwell
    Belfast Telegraph – Oct 29, 2007
"The draw is not ideal but the improvement in performance has lifted our self belief and hopefully we can get back to winning ways. " Ulster travel to Glasgow this week looking for their first away win of the season following defeats at Edinburgh the Dragons and Llanelli. Glasgow boast an unbeaten home record so Ulster will have their work cut out but Caldwell feels the side must get a victory to build momentum going into the Heineken Cup which starts next week. "It’s back to the drawing board to get set up for Glasgow and hopefully get a win and then into Gloucester which is a big one for us" he said. The Ulster lineout must improve if they are to go and beat Glasgow as they lost too much ball on their own throw meaning they were unable to establish an attacking platform in the game. Another worrying aspect for Ulster as Europe dawns is a lack of tries. In the five league games Ulster have only crossed the white line once in each of them and are currently the lowest points scorers in the competition with 62 points.

Cockerill finds much to crow about even in defeat
    Guardian Unlimited – Oct 29, 2007
Forget Saturday says Cockerill Leicester may have lost the first game in defence of their Anglo-Welsh title but it was part of a more important game plan. “I’ve got the bigger picture to look at” said the former England hooker after seeing his gamble on a below-strength side go down. “Today wasn’t the bigger picture. ” Next weekend against Cardiff his last match in charge before returning to the job of coaching the forwards Cockerill will put out the strongest side available hoping not only to redress Saturday’s defeat but more importantly to give the dozen internationals returning from the World Cup a game before Leicester visit Leinster.
