They can keep their championship hopes alive, they can still qualify for the Heineken Cup, the relegation issue is not completely settled (although it would take a mathematical miracle to save Leeds), and many players are only too aware their contracts are by no means a given for next year. The heavyweight clash this weekend will see Wasps try to beat Leicester for the first time at Welford Road. On recent form, it will be too much for the Londoners, whose normally perfect end-of-season charge is wobbling. A lot of it is not down to them and, whatever their critics may say, Wasps were decimated by the World Cup when they won only one of their opening six games. This was compounded by being put in the Heineken Cup’s group of death, and serious injuries to key players such as Joe Worsley, Tom Rees and Riki Flutey.

“England can rely on an excellent player. He’s ready,I have no doubts. ”In his absence, Ellis missed plenty of important games – Premiership final,Heineken Cup final, the World Cup and the RBS Six Nations Championship – butback-to-back games against Wasps are enough to sate his appetite forcompetition. At the heart of the battle will be his tussle against Reddan, who made abrilliant break last weekend to set up a try for Paul Sackey. “He’s a greatplayer and I’m looking forward to playing against him,” Ellis said. “There’salways that extra ‘us and them’ factor when we play Wasps. And when you’vebeen out for ten months, you enjoy these games more than ever.
