Rugby: Same old plot as ABs deal to plucky Welsh
Otago Daily Times, New Zealand
When you face a team like the All Blacks – fit, skilled and well honed – guts and ticker only work for so long. It makes you wonder why they get such large crowds to club rugby in the United Kingdom. Those playing in the English premiership or the European-wide Heineken Cup are always going on about the quality of the rugby played, how strong it is, and what a great “product” it is. But really it is more $2 shop than Harrods. Rugby in the United Kingdom is still dominated by the boot. The kicking of the ball for position is still widely applauded as is the dropped goal. That is what fans have come to expect and they are quite happy with it.

The Regatta’s purpose is to increase Curaçao’s popularity in Europe and the United States. It will put Curaçao on the international sailing calendar. In addition, Curaçao will become more interesting as a place to repair and maintain yachts, especially during the hurricane season.
Mud, sweat and tears in soggy England

Of course I missed it, opting instead to go east and finally catching a bus to dump me within spitting distance of where some of the stars of the England team train. Wasps Rugby Club ranks among the heavyweights of Europe. They were recent Premiership champions (2003, 2004 and 2005) and they’ve twice lifted the Heineken Cup with lantern-jawed Lawrence Dallaglio their most famous totem. He’s a proper god in these parts. Given their status as one of European rugby’s heavy hitters, I had visions of a grand stadium, gleaming sports cars in the car park and pristine fields. Their training base is nothing of the sort. Set in middle-class Acton, west of London, it’s no more than a few soggy fields with an unprepossessing clubhouse.

They currently sit ninth but, having played six of their opening nine games away from home, Goode is expecting an improvement. That began last weekend when he kicked all six of his side’s penalty goals to beat Clermont Auvergne 18-16 on home soil. “We have already played Perpignan, Stade Francais and Toulouse and we are hoping to improve our position with a few home games,” said Goode. “It was good to beat Clermont and we were winning 12-11 at half-time in Toulouse before losing 21-15.
