Edinburgh’s Chris Paterson planning to silence Wasps in Heineken …

If that pattern is to change then Edinburgh and Paterson must target Friday’s meeting with Wasps at Murrayfield as a must-win match. Both sides go into the game with one win and one defeat in this season’s competition and both are already all too uncomfortably aware that another defeat would almost certainly obliterate their prospects of securing a place in the tournament’s last eight. Like Munster Wasps have a rich history of winning critical games a trait measured by the fact they have won the Heineken Cup twice and have ended each of the past six seasons with one piece of silverware or another. “I think Wasps have a big game mentality that not a lot of other teams can match” suggested Paterson as he looked ahead to the game. “They have so many international players who can turn it on so you have to be pretty wary of them. But their season has been quite similar to ours being so up and down so it’s a hugely important game for both teams. ” Paterson was quick to point out that Edinburgh’s recent victims in Europe have included Wasps as well as sides of the calibre of Leinster and Toulouse.

Heineken extend European Rugby Cup sponsorship to 2013 despite …

Having begun its sponsorship of the ERC in 1995 the renegotiated contract means that Heineken is now entering its 14th season as the title sponsor of European domestic rugby’s premier knockout tournament. In its first season as sponsor the European Cup featured just 12 teams from five countries compared to the 24 from six countries now included. The news comes in the week that the Heineken Cup returns to action. Stade Francais are set to break the competition’s attendance record this weekend having sold over 65000 advance tickets for their home tie with Harlequins. The 70000 expected in Paris for the game is a marked contrast from the 1000 that attended the very first Heineken Cup fixture between Romanian side Farul Constanta and Toulouse in 1995. Will Greenwood a tournament ambassador described the Heineken Cup as the premier club competition in the world. “It is a tournament unrivalled for pride and passion; the key word to describe it is probably ‘tribal’” said Greenwood.

A rough diamond eager to make the cut

“I’m fairly happy with the amount of games I’ve got so far this season. I started against Ospreys and Connacht and then came on in another three in the Magners league. I wasn’t in the Heineken Cup squad because I was injured for both (Wasps and Edinburgh). ” Before this year few had heard of O’Brien who was then busily engaged in both playing in the Leinster Academy and coaching his local side Tullow who reached the finals of the Towns Cup last season before they were beaten by Navan 33-16. This season his natural force has made him an occasional but also an eye-catching part of the Leinster squad. “It (coaching Tullow) keeps my feet firmly on the ground when I go back home and it’s good to get an insight into a bit of coaching” he says explaining the merits of mucking in with the people who knew him before he ever put a blue shirt over his head. “And it gives me a better outlook about what my coach wants from me when I’m up here.
Scarlets lament the loss of Meeuws

“If anybody can comeback then he can but in all honesty I can’t say whether he will or he won’t. “From what I hear the surgery has gone well but it is a very delicate injury and there are no guarantees. ” Fellow Kiwi Deacon Manu who has only himself just returned from injury will start in the Heineken Cup clash against Ulster at Ravenhill tomorrow night. Davies admitted he could look at bringing in somebody in on a short-term loan although the Scarlets are hoping the long-term answer from next season will lie in Wales tight-head Rhys Thomas. “It is a very difficult position to replace and it is not as though they are growing on trees” added Davies. “We only had two specialist tight-head props in our squad and this has just exposed the problem. ” “We have to look at that position whether it is a short-term or even whether it is a long-term answer.
