Heineken Cup resumes with extra French flavour

getElementsByTagName(”p”)[0]);}}}}So farewell to the Boks Blacks Wallabies and Pacific Island Warriors and welcome once more to club rugby ? in the highly desirable form of the Heineken European Cup. And if the Heineken matches are in formal terms inferior to internationals they still have an authenticity not always evident in the inter-continental friendlies played in summer and autumn. There is little that is friendly about the competition for European rugby?s most important prize. Round three of the pool stage this weekend brings one of the Heineken?s distinctive features: part one of the home and away double-header contested on the third and fourth weekends. There is nothing else quite like it in modern rugby. This is not always a virtue.

After all the euphoria of Wales’ victory over Australia last week the four regions will plunge straight back in at the deep end this weekend. Precious Heineken Cup points are up for grabs and any slip-ups could prove very costly. That is certainly the case for the Ospreys. But with European giants Leicester and Perpignan still to come they don’t just need a win today they need a bonus point. For all the respect they undoubtedly deserve Treviso are by far the easiest opponents Holley’s men will face in the group stage. And as such he is well aware they must pick up maximum points both home and away.
Heineken extend European Rugby Cup sponsorship to 2013 despite …
Telegraph.co.uk United Kingdom
Having begun its sponsorship of the ERC in 1995 the renegotiated contract means that Heineken is now entering its 14th season as the title sponsor of European domestic rugby’s premier knockout tournament. In its first season as sponsor the European Cup featured just 12 teams from five countries compared to the 24 from six countries now included. The news comes in the week that the Heineken Cup returns to action. Stade Francais are set to break the competition’s attendance record this weekend having sold over 65000 advance tickets for their home tie with Harlequins. The 70000 expected in Paris for the game is a marked contrast from the 1000 that attended the very first Heineken Cup fixture between Romanian side Farul Constanta and Toulouse in 1995. Will Greenwood a tournament ambassador described the Heineken Cup as the premier club competition in the world. “It is a tournament unrivalled for pride and passion; the key word to describe it is probably ‘tribal’” said Greenwood.

A lost bonus point would be tantamount todefeat. That keeps it interesting until Lee Byrne one of the best ofBritish scores or makes the the fourth try. Stade Francais v Harlequins The prettiest Anglo-French encounter in the history of the Heineken Cup withthe Harlequins famously garish strip swamped by Parisian pink. Being playedin front of somewhere near 80000 spectators at the Stade de France thiswill be not only the most colourful contest of the weekend but potentiallythe best. Moody Stade were wondrous against the Scarlets for 20 minutes inthe last round but against a Harlequins team that is running hot 20 minutesmight not be enough. Nick Evans the bold Kiwi fly half was signed fornight like this. It could be one of the London club’s great days.
