Bernard Jackman Brian O’Driscoll and Simon Keogh scored the Dubliners’ tries in the second half but there wasn’t too much rejoicing over the final 33-3 scoreline which disguised an error-filled display. Castres who are under threat towards the bottom of the French championship tackled and tackled and tackled. But they are not formidable Heineken Cup opponents. Michael Cheika’s side will need to rack up the tries in the return match in France next weekend. Gloucester chasing the Cardiff Blues in Pool Six also collected an expected victory in their case in Italy against Calvisano. Mark Foster Ryan Lamb Marco Bortolami Luke Narraway Mike Tindall and the infamous “penalty” were responsible for the Guinness Premiership side’s tries Olly Barkley converting five times. Calvisano scored two tries and played their part but Nicola Cattina their replacement flanker was sent off.

Record crowd left stung by entertainment-free visit of Wasps

Edinburgh had a small cult following of diehard fans who appreciated their commitment to running rugby. It was like watching a Peter Greenaway film or listening to a Yo La Tengo album; superb entertainment but it bypassed the masses. On Friday night Edinburgh played against Wasps in the Heineken Cup in front of a healthy crowd just shy of 8000 and never mind that the figure was boosted by a kids-for-free promotion. Having attracted the biggest Heineken Cup crowd in their historADVERTISEMENTy Edinburgh then played the worst game of rugby in their Heineken Cup history. It cost an adult £20 to get into Murrayfield on Friday night and most of them would have paid twice that much to get out of Murrayfield again such was the “entertainment” on offer. I’ve had more fun at the dentist. Only half of the two teams on view wanted to play rugby and even then for only for half the match.
