Tyrone Howe: Why Munster have me feeling green with envy

There is a fundamental problem however. If I continue to follow rugby how can I possibly stop? How could you not be a bag of nerves after last weekend’s action? How could you stay calm? Whether it was the triumphant debut of Dan Carter in the South of France Nick Evans last minute heroics at the Stoop or Munster’s get-out-of-jail victory at Thomond Park there was more than enough drama to put a manicurist out of business. Above all it provided further evidence if any was needed that the Heineken Cup is the best club competition in the rugby world. Several weeks ago I got a flavour of the Thomond atmosphere when I watched Munster’s narrow defeat to the All Blacks on the television. The Haka performed by the four honourary Munstermen in front of their team-mates was one of the greatest moments of sporting theatre I have ever witnessed. Similar yet different to the act of defiance that Willie Anderson inspired at Lansdowne Road in the green of Ireland. It sent shivers down the spine and it surprised me not one bit when I heard a Munster supporter refer to that evening as a “spiritual” experience.
Gavin Henson can give Ospreys Heineken Cup lift
Sunday Mirror UK
Henson 26 missed the emphatic Heineken Cup triumph over Waters’ Treviso last weekend to be with partner Charlotte Church who is due to give birth. The Wales star centre has not played for just under two months following a troublesome Achilles but is on course to face Newport Gwent Dragons on Friday. Waters who lifted Europe’s top prize twice with London Wasps in 2004 and 2007 said: “If the Ospreys can get their players fit like Gavin Henson they can win the pool and go a long way in the competition. “He will add creativity and with James Hook they can cause Leicester and Perpignan problems.

MARC Stcherbina’s rugby future remains uncertain.
The Australian Australia
The injured Australian centre recovered from a serious neck injury to meet Newport Gwent Dragons team-mates at the weekend. A spokeswoman for the Welsh club said Stcherbina made an emotional address to fellow players in their home change rooms ahead of a 26-13 loss to Toulouse in the Heineken Cup on Saturday. “It’s not something that has been referred to by management or Marc” the spokeswoman said of the 32-year-old’s career prospects. “He was just here to inspire the boys. ” Stcherbina underwent surgery in Toulouse after he was hurt during a head-on tackle in the Dragons’ previous match against the French side a week earlier. He returned to Britain by air ambulance on Thursday.

The Blues also play the following Friday although their second match is the slightly easier task of squaring up to Calvisano at home. But at the moment it is Gloucester who need to pull out all the stops and win both matches. Also needing two wins from two and with a bonus point are Perpignan. They face the Ospreys on Saturday January 17 and Treviso the following Saturday.

Dai Young to rest his Wales stars for Scarlets trip
WalesOnline United Kingdom
Young watched his side maintain their unbeaten Heineken Cup record against Biarritz last weekend with their fourth straight victory leaving them flying high at the top of their European pool. The Blues director of rugby named an unchanged side for both matches against the French outfit. But he is now preparing to leave out Wales quartet Martyn Williams Gethin Jenkins Tom Shanklin and Andy Powell for the derby trip to Parc y Scarlets. These players have had no break since their autumn international commitments with Wales and Young insisted they had to be rested some time. “Players need to be mentally refreshed and there will a lot of changes this weekend” said Young “So this week we won’t be using the likes of Gethin Tom Martyn and Andy.
