It becomes a one-off a cup final rather than a league game. Previous form counts for less and the crowd atmosphere and pressure will be different to a regular match against Wales. Munster’s Heineken Cup veterans should theoretically be in their element as they proudly pull on Ireland shirts again on Saturday. They know all about big one-off games at the Millennium Stadium. Stringer would be a good man to listen to this week along with captain ‘Driscoll and props Marcus Horan and John Hayes. That quartet started their last Grand Slam decider – against England six years ago when they came a distant second while Paul ‘Connell and Ronan ‘Gara came off the bench that afternoon at Lansdowne Road. They got it wrong that day.

Six weeks ago Hayman admitted there were a number of issues warranting resolution before he could commit to his full contract not least the Falcons’ continued Premiership status. He was concerned with off-field issues but talked this of the infrastructure improvements in the wake of chairman Dave Thomson’s decision to recommit to the cause. He said playing Heineken Cup rugby was a driving force to stay. “All the players are inspired by that and personally it’s the pinnacle of the competition to be involved in that. “It opens up a whole lot of avenues for the club in terms of sponsorship and attracting other players that you probably wouldn’t normally attract to the club for the sole purpose of being involved in the Heineken Cup. “It would be a huge achievement for the club to be able to get in there and if we could do that it would be a great step in the right direction. Now Hayman has confirmed he will be part of next season’s squad he even quipped he might get a head-start on a second career as an agent.

Madjer who was appointed by Michel Platini as envoy of the European Union to present the cup had tried to ignore the German company that sponsors the campaign while answering the questions of journalists. These latter on their turn have avoided to irritate him by questions on the subject. Heineken officials present at the Sheraton hotel were very irritated and disappointed that Madjer avoided mentioning a word of thanks to their company which had paid him a large sum of money to accept moving from Doha to Algiers to present the famous cup. The cup came to Algeria the second step in its African tour from Lagos then will go to Cairo and then to South Africa. This cup is the same which will be awarded to the winner of the European Cup on 21 May in Rome. Madjer is the only Arab and third African winner of this cup. Madjer: "It is an honour for me and for Algeria" Madjer in his speech expressed his thanks to Michel Platini for the confidence he had placed in him to present the cup in this African tour.
