Instead the Ireland centre arrives in Johannesburg today to bolster the Lions’ flagging midfield resources. There is no suggestion thus far that Keith Earls or Riki Flutey will not play again on tour but the management are clearly concerned that there is no certainty when either will be fit for selection. It might be a matter of days it might be a week or more one Lions official said and on a ten-match tour there is precious little leeway. Earls the Munsterman damaged the joints of his right shoulder against the Royal XV in Phokeng on Saturday and Flutey has fluid on the right knee after tweaking the joint late in the same game.

The 26-year-old has returned to Australia after a successful nine-month sabbatical with Leinster – with Elsom putting in a man-of-the-match display in the 19-16 Heineken Cup final win over Leicester at Murrayfield. And Elsom who previously played for the Waratahs is relishing a return to Super 14s rugby. “I’m very happy to be joining the Brumbies in 2010 and I look forward to mounting a challenge for the Super 14 title” he said. Brumbies head coach Andy Friend is delighted to have Elsom available for selection. “Rocky has played an integral role in any of his sides’ success over the past five years whether it be the Waratahs the Wallabies or Leinster” he said.

It’s the fact that both sides are in with a chance to pinch victory as the game builds to a climax. That’s not necessarily a criticism. Sport is at its most enthralling when the element of competition is at its most intense. Both of the Heineken Cup semi-finals fell into that category as did the Grand Slam shoot-out between Wales and Ireland in the Six Nations as do most of the contests in the Premiership.
HEINEKEN CUP

com caught up with Kenny Logan to get his views on the Heineken Cup final. Leicester take on Leinster in the Heineken Cup final on Saturday just sevens days after lifting the Guinness Premiership trophy and Logan who won the double with London Wasps in 2004 believes the quick turn around will give them the advantage. “I think it is good for them and will hold them in good stead” Logan told skysports. “I know from my Wasps days when we had big back-to-back games many people said it would harm our chances. I disagree and believed it was a massive advantage for us.

The house was in ribbons and had about as much certainty of its stability as a tent on a rough day in Valentia. It was a bad house in a nice neighbourhood. We were late and arrived to find the estate agent brooding in the doorway as his Heineken Cup final Saturday was being ruined by a pair of tyre-kickers from Carlow. We took a look around well aware that the asking price of €625000 was out of our league but it was negotiable apparently as long as you were willing to be scolded for negotiating in the wrong direction. The house had a number of things right with it. It’s in a cul-de-sac 10 minutes by foot from work (including time to stop off and watch a bumblebee suck nectar out of a flower in a hedgerow which we did afterwards). There was a good deal of space though the house wasn’t massive and two of the four bedrooms had barely enough room to accommodate fold-up people let alone fold-up beds.

Gotting 28 made over 50 appearances for Wasps helping them to three Premiership titles (2003-05) the Heineken Cup in 2004 and the Parker Pen Challenge Cup in 2003. The highlight of his Wasps career coming in the 2004 Premiership final against Bath where his second half introduction was pivotal to steadying the Wasps lineout out and as they overturned a 6-0 deficit to win 10-6. Gotting began his rugby career with Camberley RFC at the age of eight going onto represent the clubs first XV. He joined Wasps in 2000 whilst still studying for a degree in Sports Science at Brunel University with his final year proving to be an extremely successful one with a BUSA Championship final win at Twickenham being followed by selection for England Universities returning to Twickenham to help Wasps win the Zurich U21 final and culminating in the U21 Wold Cup in South Africa. He left Wasps in 2006 to join Worcester Warriors but would endure an injury blighted two-years at Sixways before last season playing his part in the resurgence of London Scottish by helping the Exiles remain unbeaten on their way to securing the National Three South title and promotion to the now revamped National ne.

Lined-up against them is a formidable trio of Serge Betsen Jerry Collins and Rocky Elsom. “I’ve played against Serge many times for club and country and he’s always very tough” said Easter. “Jerry Collins is a very big hitter in the tackle and Rocky has proved just how good he is again in the Heineken Cup. Chris Robshaw and I played against Rocky in the Heineken Cup quarter-final and Chris said afterwards what a top player Rocky is. Copyright © 2009 The Press Association. All rights reserved.
