Kidney is master of all he surveys

This victory was fuelled by heart and desire directed by Jonny Sexton who has grown from a boy into a man in the last two months and achieved by an array of skills which were vastly superior to anything that their English counterparts could produce. And the man in the middle of it all? Who else but Declan Kidney. I heard it said that 2009 must be the year of the leprechaun with the Magners League Heineken Cup Grand Slam and now the Churchill Cup coming home to these shores. The joke was made that it was fortunate for England that Irish sides do not compete in the EDF Energy competition as that trophy would also now be sitting on the IRFU mantelpiece. Kidney’s massive contribution to this success is undeniable. For years he nurtured and shaped the Munster machine his place in Irish international history is assured with that elusive Grand Slam and now he has led Ireland ‘A’ to its first ever victory in the Churchill Cup. I have no idea what his singing voice is like but in rugby terms Kidney definitely has the X factor.
Humphreys accepts new Ulster role

Initially it will be a case of going back to basics. "Goals include making the top six in the Magners League and acquitting ourselves better in Europe. "It’s been 10 years since Ulster qualified for the knock-out stages of the Heineken Cup and while we are in quite a tough pool we have to set our targets. "There is loads of potential in Ulster at present. I know most of the squad and what they are capable of producing. My aim is to get them to move up a gear.

European Rugby Cup Limited have announced major changes to the knockout stages to their second tier competition below the Heineken Cup. From next season the top three runners-up in their Heineken Cup pools who fail to qualify for the quarter-finals will qualify for the same stage of the European Challenge Cup. The six pool winners and the two best runners-up currently qualify for the knockout stages of the Heineken Cup. Now the next best three teams in the Heineken Cup will play the five European Challenge Cup pool winners. The changes which run along similar lines to soccer’s Uefa Cup (now the Europa League) will give the second tier tournament some much- needed profile and added bite.
