    Revamped Thomond Park brings in 60m

    A study commissioned by Munster Rugby estimated the value of the four Heineken Cup games and the All Blacks match was €58 million to the local area. The report carried out by BD Simpson Xavier found that the Heineken Cup quarter-final match against spreys in April generated €10. 5 million for the Limerick economy with visiting fans spending an average of €527 each over the match weekend. The weekend of the quarter-final against the spreys also created an extra 280 part-time jobs and 3912 hotel bed nights with most visiting fans staying for an average of two nights in the city. The authors of the report predict that the two summer concerts at Thomond Park will generate almost €20 million for the local economy.

    European Rugby Cup Limited have announced major changes to the knockout stages to their second tier competition below the Heineken Cup. From next season the top three runners-up in their Heineken Cup pools who fail to qualify for the quarter-finals will qualify for the same stage of the European Challenge Cup. The six pool winners and the two best runners-up currently qualify for the knockout stages of the Heineken Cup. Now the next best three teams in the Heineken Cup will play the five European Challenge Cup pool winners. The changes which run along similar lines to soccer’s Uefa Cup (now the Europa League) will give the second tier tournament some much- needed profile and added bite.

"It’s been 10 years since Ulster qualified for the knock-out stages of the Heineken Cup and while we are in quite a tough pool we have to set our targets. The summer camp runs from Monday July 21 until Friday July 24. n the Friday there will be Leinster players visiting the summer camp with the Heineken Cup and in a season that saw such fantastic success for Leinster this promises to be a great attraction. The players will be signing autographs for the camp participants and they will also be joining in the fun with children and coaches. The camp is open to boys and girls aged between six and 12 years old. The official summer camp pack consists of socks shorts tee-shirts gym bag and rugby balls. Should it happen to rain during the summer camp week entertainment will be provided in the clubhouse for the children.
